What Happened in the Hours That Jesus Died and Rose Again

This weekend is one of the most recognizable weekends on the calendar each year for Christians with Expert Friday beingness the celebration of Jesus' decease on the cross and Easter celebrating his Resurrection the following Sunday morning.

But the question of Jesus' location between His death and resurrection has been a betoken of debate among some Christians for the terminal couple millennia.

"I'm not a guy who'southward going to act like I have all the answers, and this is i that I tin can't say I definitively know," said Eric Petty, the atomic number 82 minister at Skyline Church of Christ in Jackson. "It is an interesting discussion, and nosotros could sit here all day and discuss and come to different conclusions and both of them be logical and understandable.

"Just at the finish of the day, all that actually matters is that Jesus died to take away my sin and your sin – all of our sins – and on the first 24-hour interval of the week later that He arose to take victory over death. And He offers that same victory to usa now."

According to the Bible, in Matthew 27:46-l, Jesus died nearly three p.m. on Friday.

Entrance to the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem.

"The Jewish calendar and clock at that time suggests that Jesus was crucified at noon and died 3 hours after at 3 p.thou. because the clock for each day begins at sunrise or virtually 6 a.m. for u.s.," said William Watson, pastor of Celebrated Beginning Baptist Church building in Jackson. "So when the Bible says Jesus was crucified at the sixth hour, that means apex, and He died at the ninth hr, which would be iii p.m.

"And the manner the Jewish agenda falls, each 24-hour interval goes from dawn until sunset. So when He died on Fri afternoon, early Sunday morning is 'the third day' subsequently His expiry as was prophesied by Jesus Himself."

And so there's about a gap of nigh 36 to 40 hours where Jesus' spiritual location is unknown.

In that location are those that believe Jesus was in Heaven during that time. The Scriptural ground for that is in Luke 23:43 when Jesus is quoted telling a thief who was crucified next to Him: "Truly, I say to you, today you will exist with me in paradise."

But there's a passage in 1 Peter iii that suggests otherwise.

After explaining Christ died once for the sins of everyone and was raised to life in 1 Peter 3:xviii, the post-obit ii verses say, "in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was beingness prepared, in which a few, that is, viii persons, were brought safely through water."

"I looked this upwards, and fifty-fifty Martin Luther, who started the Protestant Reformation and was knowledgeable of Scripture, he even said in his ain commentaries this is the most hard passage in the New Testament to empathise because it'southward not very articulate what Peter is trying to say," Fiddling said. "You lot read through the chapter and you see 'Christ died for anybody's sins.' OK I get that.

"'He was raised to life in the Spirit.' OK. I'k all the same with you Peter. And then he adds in, 'And He went and preached to the spirits in prison who disobeyed God long ago while Noah was edifice the ark.' And I desire to be similar, "Hey Peter, can you go dorsum over that again?' But unfortunately that's not going to happen at this point."

Based on the wording in i Peter, in that location'south an argument that Jesus spent the weekend between His death and Resurrection in Hell preaching to the souls who were already there, giving them a chance at the forgiveness available through His sacrifice non previously available before His death.

place the resurrection of Jesus Christ

The wording of the text suggests Jesus did that at least for those who drowned in the Inundation when information technology rained forty days and 40 nights in Genesis half dozen while Noah and his family were in the ark.

Watson has his ain belief near the passage from Peter.

"I would submit to you that there were people who believed in Christ earlier His incarnation on this world," Watson said. "We read almost how righteousness was accounted unto Abraham, simply there was no manner to be righteous before Christ, and so righteousness could be accounted to those people who were on earth earlier Christ.

"They believed on Him and His saving ability. I think Jesus didn't necessarily preached to those people who were in Sheol or the nighttime abyss that is being absent from the presence of God forever. But He preached to those souls who were in a prison but had believed in Him earlier He came to globe and lived as a human being and told them, 'You lot lived with religion in Me, and you lot're about to come across what y'all believed I would do happen.'"

Both Fiddling and Watson had similar views about anyone asking the question or whatever question related to Scripture.

"If someone is asking that question, it'south not a bad thing," Watson said. "God said in His word, 'Seek Me and you lot will find Me.'

"He lowered Himself lower than the states so He could lift united states of america upwards, and because He came down to our level, we tin can expect for Him and He volition reveal Himself to us."

"Discussions similar this are good considering the first thing God wants from us is for usa to look for Him," Picayune said. "And if 2 of u.s. or a group of us may disagree on something like this, simply we discuss logical, Scripturally-based reasons for what nosotros believe, that can only be a good thing.

"The main thing is to believe in the facts that Jesus came to globe, lived perfectly, died for our sins, rose once again, ascended to Sky and will return to earth to take His followers to Heaven with Him. And that's why nosotros even celebrate the Resurrection."
