autocad 3d drawing in z axis

Topics covered in this Lesson:

3D Coordinate system | Rotation in 3D

The 3-D Coordinate System

Past at present yous should be very comfortable working your style around the X-Y coordinate system. Anyway, here is a quick review. Looking from the program view, this is what you see to figure out where is positive 10 and positive Y.

X-Y Co-ordinate System

If y'all were to expect at the same picture, but at a slight angle, you lot would see the third axis. This new axis is called the Z-axis. Imagine that the positive Z-centrality is coming towards you out of the monitor.

X-Y-Z Co-ordinate System

The Z-axis has ever been there, lurking in the background, waiting for you lot.

When you entered points previously, you would enter them in the format: 10,Y. By doing this, you let AutoCAD know that in these cases, Z was equal to nix. Entering iv,3 would exist the same every bit entering iv,three,0. Now if you drew a line from the origin (0,0,0) to a betoken at four,3,2, yous would go a line that goes 4 inches to the correct, 3 inches up and two inches towards you. The properties of this line would be this:

Modify Line (Prperties) Dialog Box

Observe that the line is actually 5.3852" long. If you were to wait at information technology from the plan view, it would wait exactly like a line drawn from 0,0 to 4,3 Depict a line from 0,0 to four,3 and so compare the backdrop.

The diagrams below, prove this line from 4 different views to illustrate how things can look unlike in 3D. Await at each 1 carefully, and see if it makes sense to you lot.

What the above images show you is that y'all will have to get used to looking at a 3D world on a 2nd monitor. In each image, the blackness line looks flat, but you have to use your reference points to decide where it truly is. If you don't understand this perfectly right now, don't worry. It's but an exercise to expose yous to 3D viewing. As the lessons progress, you will get much more familiar to this.

Why is this of import to wait at earlier inbound the world of 3-D? If you were to merely look at a three-D model from the plan (top) view, you would not exist able to see any difference between the two lines. (Depict them and meet for yourself) On a three-D model, you can easily have many points over top of each other. This would be very difficult to work with. You may think you're snapping to a particular endpoint, but the reality of it could be very different (think of how the height of the wall looks the same as the bottom of the wall if you're looking straight downward it).

Fortunately, AutoCAD provides different viewing options for 3-D drafting. This will exist discussed in more than detail during in a later lesson. For at present, one way to change your view is to type in the VIEW command. It will bring up this dialog box:

View command in AutoCAD

Using the options shown in a higher place, y'all can see what the SW Isometric view looks similar by selecting that option on the left then pressing the "Set Current" button. This will shut the dialog box and change the view.

To go back to the top view, simply get-go the VIEW command and choose "Top" from the list on the left and press "Ready Electric current" again.

3D Rotation

Now for the confusing function. You already know how to rotate 2D objects, but y'all also accept to know how AutoCAD measures angles of rotation in iii-D. There is a somewhat simple rule for this chosen "The Correct Mitt Rule". To figure out which is the positive rotation angle, imagine that you are wrapping your right hand around the axis with your pollex pointing towards the positive end. The management that your fingers are wrapped is the positive direction of rotation. This applies to all three axes.

Positive Rotation in 3D

Direction of positive rotation using the right hand rule

The main point of this lesson is to tell you lot that objects can play a joke on you in 3D space. Shortcuts don't ever work, y'all have to be careful with Osnaps and your cartoon can plow into a mess very quickly if you're not paying attention. Trust me, I've seen enough students take the piece of cake route and have to start over. If you want to acquire 3D, review each lesson before progressing. Make certain you know the concepts within and out. This is just an introduction to the concepts, y'all will learn more in the post-obit lessons. You may still want to refer back to this tutorial, though.
